Caption This: A Sonic for Every Generation

With SEGA recently announcing the newest Sonic the Hedgehog title via FaceBook earlier this week, the teaser trailer has everyone buzzing.  In what will become an ongoing segment on this blog, I will post a picture I find interesting and look to you, the amazingly creative general audience, to provide a silly and humorous caption.  What say you, good people of the interwebs?

And for those who want to see more, here is the official Teaser Trailer for Sonic Generations:

Random Ramblings: L.A. Noire, HAWP, and Royal Comedy

So looking ahead at this month's release cycle for games, I realized something.  There isn't a single game coming out that I'm even remotely interested in purchasing.  Mortal Kombat? Not for me.  The First Templar?  I hate Assassin's Creed, so I doubt I'd care for a cheap imitation.  Portal 2? Don't care. It's just not worth $60 to me.  $20 as part of a compilation of Valve titles? You betcha.  Otherwise, pass.  It sucks but at the same time, it's giving me some much needed time to catch up on a few classics and take full advantage of my Gamefly membership.

I just finished the first Dead Space today, pure magnificence. I'm supposed to get Knights Contract in the mail tomorrow, so even when there aren't any games coming out I really have no right to complain.  I'm still playing new games so the content is fresh.  I guess I just demand too much from my industry.  This year is shaping up to be one for the history books as it is, with Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, Elder Scrolls 5, and Arkham City all happening within a month of each other.  So again, I really have no grounds for my frustration, I just find myself needing to senselessly complain.

I'll tell you what I'm most excited for, L.A. Noire.  I got a first-hand look at the game at PAX East 2011 last month and words cannot express how polished and well executed this game is.  If you're a fan of Film Noir, murder mysteries, or open world crime solving, than you can't miss this upcoming epic.  Rockstar never ceases to amaze, and Team Bondi is doing some really incredible work here.  This new "Gamescan" stuff they're using is simply mind-blowing, and gets me thinking about how this technology could potentially be combined with something like Kinect to create the ultimate immersion experience.  Pretty wild stuff.

Speaking of things that exude awesomeness, the latest "Hey Ash, Watcha Playing?" aired today.  As a gamer, and writer, and a part of the generation that grew up with the internet, I absolutely adore HAWP.  Ash and Anthony Burch (as well as the ever-amazing Papa Burch) have created something that feels uniquely refreshing, even though in all honesty the webseries is really something any gamer could pull off.  Not to diminish the quality of their series, the show is absolutely original and hysterical, but what gives it an extra bit of charm is the fact that it feels totally real.  While these characters may be ridiculous and gross exaggerations at times, they still exist in the real world and understand current events and pop culture.  HAWP is one of the reasons I love the internet.  It proves that people could endlessly entertain each other now that most of us have the resources to create our own content.

Equally entertaining, or so I hope, is the new film "Your Highness" which released today.  Honestly, I've been looking forward to the movie for so long I am beyond jaded so I know I'll enjoy the film no matter what happens.  Hopefully it ends up being as good as I imagine.  It has the potential and everything I've seen so far from the trailers and clips looks to be exactly what I want out of the experience.  It doesn't need to take itself seriously, I just want to have a good time in one of my favorite story settings, Medieval Times.  On a seemingly random yet totally related sidenote, watch Camelot if you enjoy that sort of atmosphere.  It's very well done.

I think that about does it for this post, but tune in next time because I have a pretty cool project in the works.  I won't spoil it here, but let's just say it involves a successor to the Dreamcast.  That's right fanboys, start drooling.  But close your mouth or you'll catch flies (Has that ever actually happened to anyone?)

A Final Farewell to Sanity

Beep Beep. Beep Beep. Beep Be… God I love the snooze button. Wait, how many times did I press it? Only twice, right? Crap, what time is it?

8:10 a.m. Waking up on time is never easy, but lately it seems altogether undoable.

Okay: Shower, brush teeth, change, out the door. All in the next twenty minutes… again. I seriously need to stop oversleeping. How is it that I’m still tired. Seriously, even oversleeping isn’t enough. What do you want from me?

The sudden rush while the water changes from hot to cold is incredible. A much needed wake-up call. Morning showers always make things bearable, for a time.

C’mon, c’mon. Lather, rinse… screw repeat. Remember when Mom used to say, “Remember to wash behind your ears and the bottom of your feet.” Always thought that was just a thing on TV but she’d actually say it. Well Mom, I remember what you said, I’m just in kind of a rush and don’t care enough to follow through. Can’t believe the Giants aren’t in the playoffs. Ridiculous. They deserve it for sucking so much. Who blows a huge lead in the 4th Quarter anyway? Eli Manning, that’s who. I should “smack the face off his face.” Haha, I love It’s Always Sunny… quality television. You know what’s not quality?

No, but I’m sure you’ll tell me.

Shut up other me, this is my internal monologue.

Really? Internal monologue? So, you’re a Super-Villain now? Why don’t you tell me your master plan while I free myself from this seemingly inescapable trap. Not before ending with a cliffhanger though, and saying “Come back next time folks. Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel.

You know what? I really don’t need commentary on top of the monologue. But thanks for being an asshole.

You got it, Hero. Time’s up anyhow, now get moving.

Shower’s done, onto the brushing of the teeth. Cutting it close, the shower is always a problem. Too. Many. Thoughts.

Does anyone enjoy brushing their teeth? Cause you know, I really enjoy starting my day with a good gagging. Except not. These electric toothbrushes are supposed to be better, but the hell if I know. Gotta shut up and get this done. I’m going to be late again. Okay, cutting corners time, I probably don’t need to brush the back teeth. I mean, who notices that shit? Is a girl's tongue long enough to reach back there? I doubt it.

Who the hell would you be kissing anyway?

That’s not the freaking point.

Sounds like a solid point to address.

The first girl I see. That’s who.

Yeah I’ll bet. Go on, I dare you.

Daring yourself. This has to be madness. Maybe this is how other people get psyched up too. Is that what this is, a pep talk? Does this shit happen to Spider-Man?

You do realize you’re NOT a Super-Hero right?

Obviously. I know that…

Out of the bathroom and time to get changed. 3 minutes left. Not a problem, getting changed is the easy part. It’s a straight shot from the bathroom to the bedroom. As long as she doesn’t…

“Hey honey, did you want some breakfast?”

“No thanks, Mom.” Ugh, is that really the best I can do? I tried feigning sincere tenderness but that last word was dripping with animosity. Well, I know who the Oscar’s not going to… She knows I’m in a rush, why does she feel the need to talk to me anyway? I wonder if she knows I hate her? She has to. I mean, nobody’s that stupid.

“Okay. I noticed you haven’t been eating breakfast lately. Everything okay?”

Try harder this time. “Yeah, everything’s good. Just trying to get into a new routine and haven’t really found the right rhythm yet.” Nicely done. Finish strong, soldier. “I’m kinda in a rush though so I’ll talk to you after school.” Works for me.

“Alright, be careful driving on the roads today. The ice is pretty bad outside.”

“Okay, Mom.” No, Really? I’m fucking well aware the damn roads are bad, I shoveled the damn snow yesterday. Jesus, she just doesn’t shut up. You’d think at least ONE thing she’d have to say would be useful information, but of course not. I can’t wait to be on my own. There’s not a single job she does that couldn’t be replaced by a machine.

Made it to the bedroom, somehow. Of course it wasn’t as easy as it should’ve been. Probably should’ve laid out the clothes last night.

Alright clothes, where do I start? Jeans are a given, but what shirt should I wear? Does it matter? Do girls really care about the shirts guys wear?

One of those days, huh? Let it go, dude, she’s just not that into you.

Why shouldn’t she be? I mean what don’t I have?

Money.

True.

A nice care.

Also a valid point.

You’re no Hugh Jackman.

Fuck you man, nobody’s Hugh Jackman.

Except Hugh Jackman.

Seriously, you‘re such a prick. I get it.

Least you have a wonderful personality.

That and five cents is worth less than a nickel.

How do you figure?

Not now. I’m late… as usual.

Clothes on and ready to roll. Miraculously, it’s only 8:35. Just enough time to get out the door and be relatively on time.

All I need to do is make it out the door and I’m home free. Might actually pull this off you sly bastard.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to drive you to school today?”

Son of a bitch. Seriously, God? You and me, we’re through professionally.
“No Mother. It’s okay.” Where is Dad? He can’t keep her distracted for just a few minutes in the morning?

“Okay but just be extra careful today.”

“I know. I heard you the first time. I’m late so I have to go now. I need to leave.”
Please, let me leave.

“Alright, honey. I’ll see you later. I love you.”

“Yeah. I love you too.”

Ha! Lying to your own Mother. Stay Classy.

Whatever, just get outside and shut the door. The morning is finally over. Tomorrow it will get easier. Just wake up earlier. How hard is that? God, I’m so done with this. Beyond done with this.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of My Imagination

Well, here we are.  I didn't think I'd ever actually get around to making a blog but you know what?  Why not.

So... since this conversation is leaning a little more toward being one-sided then the ones I'm used to having, I guess this is the part where I give somewhat of a background about myself. An origin story, if you will.

I'm an avid comic book reader.  Have been since I learned to read.  Spider-Man has always been my favorite.  He's been through a bit of a rough patch lately but every day is a Brand New Day (see what I did there?  No? Then start reading comics or you're going to feel awfully left out around here.) and things seem to be on the right track.  I'm not a total Marvel Fanboy though, while I do love them and find them to be superior to DC, you just can't argue with some of DC's roster.  Green Lantern, Batman, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are some of the greatest characters around.  Batman has the greatest Rogues Gallery no question.

Aside from comics, I've always been a fan of science fiction, across all mediums.  I'm not a Trekkie, or the number one Star Wars fan (which I know sounds like blasphemy being a Sci-Fi guy who doesn't love those two things.  But I promise, there's nothing blasphemous about it.  I checked) but I do appreciate the universes they live in and certainly borrow elements from their storytelling whenever crafting my own.  I am a HUGE Firefly/Serenity fan though, so at least there's one cult audience that will come to my defense when I'm in need.

My most important hobby would have to be gaming.  I'm a hardcore gamer.  RPG's are my favorite genre.  Before you go making any assumptions about me, just remember this is 2011.  Point being: I'm 21, in shape, and have an active and healthy social life.  Also, I'm pretty handsome, funny, smart... and sprinkled with a touch of what others may call arrogance but what I like to pretend is self-confidence.  I grew up with Spider-Man, remember?  Anyway, My favorite game developer is BioWare, which should come as no surprise considering I'm a writer.  They craft the best stories ever.  Period.  There's no comparison.  BioWare games are hardly games at all.  They're an experience.  Experiences that, I'll be honest, inspired me to become a creative writer.  If I'm ever a fraction as good a storyteller as their worst game's story, I'll have succeeded in achieving my wildest aspirations.

I play a lot of platformers too, and love shelling out money to take a chance on a new IP.  Gotta give the little guys a chance, you know?  Some of the best games of last year are invisible to the average gamer.  Enslaved and Majin, anyone?  They're far from perfect, but they've got what matters most, heart.

So I guess the last point to address would be what to expect from this blog.  Well, I like to write random short stories that pop into my head, so there will be plenty of those.  I tend to get over excited at things most people hardly care about.  (I NEED a Xoom Tablet and the Droid Bionic NOW!! Like seriously, now.)  The point of that statement being I'll probably use this space to rant and rave about the latest tech gadgets and game releases.  Also, if something important happens in a show I like watching (Bones, Fringe, or Chuck most likely) you will certainly hear about it.   I'm also working on a huge sci-fi project.  I'm writing a novel which will hopefully branch out into multiple stories and side stories for years to come.  In my head, it's playing out like an old-school RPG, but for now I realize i'm just a small fish in a big sea so one step at a time.  Yeah... I have an overactive imagination.

Hopefully, if you managed to read through all that, you've decided to stick around.  Don't be afraid to comment because I love talking to people about whatever.  If you'd like to get a feel for my journalistic side, I'm also a blogger for the sites http://www.scholargamers.com/ and http://www.stledgerswoods.com/ on top of my own personal game reviews site http://www.gamingsnirvana.com/ Check 'em out if you want.  Enjoy the crazy!
